As many of you may have noticed with the arrival of the cold weather all of the Grit bins and grit piles in and around the village have disappeared, making many of the roads dangerous. This is not only a very serious safety concern for residents but also people passing through the village, especially with sometimes large goods vehicles and tankers servicing some of the local business's.
It has been said that the local council is wanting £85.00 for a Grit bin being supplied and then a further £75.00 for refills of grit. According to NYCC website 'Salt bins or salt heaps will only be provided by the County Council on steep hills, dangerous bends and outside schools that are not on a Priority One route.' This is simply unbelievable considering the few amenities and public services that service our villiage considering the amount of council tax which we all have to pay.
What can be done? well upon making a few phone calls and a little Googling, it seems that the roads being gritted falls under North Yorkshire County Councils responsibility and not Hambletons as first thought. All the information leads to a web form and email address on NYCC website which allows you to report concerns with the highways such as the lack of Grit being available for residents. If you wish to make a complaint regarding this then simply send an email to

with your concerns and hopefully if enough people complain we will be able to get the grit bins reinstated.
